The best first Christmas gifts for a baby match their stage: black-and-white toys for a newborn, a wooden play gym for the months of looking and reaching, a busy board from 6 months, and simple wooden toys or a keepsake box near the first birthday. Choose one gift the baby will use for months, add a personal touch such as their name or a handwritten message, and follow the age marked on each toy.
We are Cherieswood, a team of three near Lake Como, and we make wooden play gyms, busy boards and small toys by hand in Italy. Below are our ideas by age, including good gifts we don’t make ourselves.
How do you choose a first Christmas gift for a baby?
Choose by age first, then by how long the gift will stay useful, then by how personal it feels.
- Age. A newborn and a ten-month-old want very different things. Follow the age on each toy and keep small parts out of reach.
- Months of use. Christmas lasts a day, but a good gift is still on the floor in March. Gifts that work across several stages get the most use.
- Fewer, better things. One well-made toy usually gets more play than five noisy ones. If you are not the parent, ask what they already have.
- A keepsake. A name, the year or a few words from you turn a toy into part of the family story.
Newborn Christmas gifts (0-3 months)
For a newborn, the most useful gifts are simple things to look at up close, with strong black-and-white contrasts.
In the first weeks, newborns see strong contrasts best and focus most easily on things roughly 8 to 12 inches from their face, which is why black-and-white patterns hold their attention. Read more in our post on why black and white helps a newborn’s vision.
Our Black & White play gym hangs four high-contrast charms (a star, a turtle, a cat and a butterfly) from a beech frame, for the baby to watch while lying on their back. For something smaller, our black and white panel is a felt strip of 16.9 x 5.5 inches, handmade in Italy for a newborn’s first months. The First Steps set pairs a black and white panel with a soft tummy time mat and a wooden car for later, when crawling begins.
In the first months babies see strong contrasts like black and white best: play gym, panel and kit, handmade in Italy. See the Black & White series

Good ideas for this age that we don’t make: a soft fabric book with high-contrast pages, a “first Christmas” ornament with the baby’s name and the year, or a memory book for the parents to record the firsts. A home-cooked meal for tired new parents is never wasted either.
Christmas gifts for babies 3-6 months
From about 3 to 6 months, a wooden play gym gets the most use, because this is when many babies start reaching for and batting at what hangs above them.
A play gym is a frame that stands over the baby with toys hanging within reach; you may also hear it called a baby gym. Our wooden play gyms have a beech frame and four felt charms we sew by hand, in eight series: Wild Animals, Black & White, Space, Fall, Adventure, Travel, Dino and Sea Animals.
Each series has its own theme, so you can match it to the parents. Campers might like the bear, tent, van and campfire of the Adventure series; sea lovers, the whale, shark, seahorse and jellyfish of Sea Animals.

A soft mat under the play gym makes floor time more comfortable. Ours measures 23.6 x 27.6 inches, comes in Animals, Space or Adventure patterns and is easy to pack for trips. Unsure when to start? Read our guide to the right age for a play gym and play mat.
Other good gifts at this age: a soft rattle that is easy to grip, a teether, or a fabric book with crinkly pages.
Christmas gifts for a 6-month-old (6-9 months)
From 6 months, when many babies are learning to sit, a busy board gives their hands plenty to do: pieces to slide, shapes to learn and a mirror to peek into.
Our personalized busy boards are wooden activity boards for practicing fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination, for ages 6 months and up. On the Wild Animals board (22.8 x 18.9 inches) the child drives a car across the savanna, learns shapes and looks for the lion. The Space board has a star to move across the galaxy, and the Llama board has shapes and a mirror. If you want, we add the child’s name on top for free.

A busy board can stay in play well past the first birthday. Ideas beyond our workshop: stacking cups, bath toys that float and pour, or sturdy board books with photos of real faces.
Christmas gifts for babies 9-12 months
Toward the first birthday, the best gifts are toys that move along the floor and pieces that will last beyond babyhood.
At this stage many babies crawl, pull up to stand and love pushing things around. Among our small wooden toys are a smooth little car finished with wax, just 4.7 x 3.5 inches, and a giraffe on wheels made of different woods and wax. Check the age marked on each toy before you choose.
For a gift that outlasts the toys, think of a toy box. Ours are made of pine wood with a cross-stitch design: a teddy bear, a giraffe or a rocking horse. The rocking horse toy box measures about 12 x 16 x 9 inches (30 x 40 x 23 cm). Today it holds toys, and later it keeps books and childhood keepsakes.
Other ideas: a shape sorter, a sturdy push toy, handmade clothes one size up, or a picture book you loved as a child with a note inside the cover.
How to make a baby’s first Christmas gift personal
The simplest way to make a baby gift personal is to add the child’s name or a few words of your own, and with us neither costs extra.
On our busy boards we add the child’s name on top for free; you type it in when you order. With our play gyms and busy boards you can also mark the order as a gift and write your own message at checkout. We write it by hand and put it in a Cherieswood envelope.
For something one of a kind, we can design custom charms for your play gym: a favorite team, the parents’ hobbies such as skiing or hiking, a place that matters to the family. You tell us your idea, and we get in touch to check that we can make it.
One more idea for any gift: a short letter to the baby, to be opened when they are older. It costs nothing, and it may become the part of the gift the family keeps longest.
Not sure what to pick? A gift card or a first-year set
If you don’t know the baby’s stage or what the parents already have, a gift card is the easiest choice; if you want one generous gift, a set covers several months at once.
A Cherieswood gift card lets the family choose a wooden play gym, busy board or toy themselves. It suits grandparents, godparents and friends who would rather let the parents decide.
For one generous gift, the Wild Animals Kit 0-12m puts together a play gym, a black and white panel and a tummy time mat for the first year. The Continuous Play bundle adds a busy board with the child’s name to a play gym and mat, and the Full Experience bundle (play gym, busy board, bookshelf and mat) is meant to last from birth until the child can read.

FAQ
What is a good first Christmas gift for a baby?
A good first Christmas gift matches the baby’s age and gets used for months: a black-and-white toy or play gym for a newborn, a busy board from 6 months, a push toy or keepsake box near the first birthday.
What should I get a 6-month-old for Christmas?
Around 6 months many babies start to sit and want to use their hands, so a busy board, stacking cups or a fabric book are good choices. Our busy boards are for ages 6 months and up, and we add the child’s name for free.
Is a play gym a good newborn Christmas gift?
Yes. In the first weeks a newborn can look at high-contrast charms, and in the months that follow many babies start reaching for them. A black-and-white series suits the very first weeks best.
Does a newborn need a Christmas present at all?
Not really. A newborn won’t remember the day, so the best gifts help the parents and last for months. A keepsake with the year, a letter for the future or a gift card all work.
Can I add a personal message to a Cherieswood gift?
Yes. On our play gyms and busy boards you can mark the order as a gift and write your own message at checkout at no extra cost. We write it by hand and slip it into a Cherieswood envelope.
